Miley has apparently reached the level of pop stardom where one name is enough.
The singer has dropped “Cyrus” from her professional name and is now being presented simply as Miley as she begins the rollout for her tenth studio album, Bass Persuades.
And if anyone was wondering how her dad felt about losing the family name from the marquee, Billy Ray Cyrus has now answered that himself.
Why is Miley Cyrus now just Miley?
In a new Instagram post, Billy Ray said he had spoken with Miley about using only her first name and told her he supported it. He compared the move to artists known by one name, including Cher and Prince, and called it a natural progression for her career.
He also pointed out a slightly perfect piece of family lore: before “Achy Breaky Heart” came out in 1992, Billy Ray says his own early merchandise simply read CYRUS.
So apparently mononyms were waiting in the family group chat this whole time.
The name change arrives with ‘Bass Persuades’
The rebrand comes as Miley prepares to release Bass Persuades on September 18, 2026. The album is being promoted under the name Miley, and follows 2025’s Something Beautiful.
She is also returning to the stage for two Hollywood Bowl shows in Los Angeles on October 16 and October 18.
The important distinction here is that this is a professional name change. Miley has not announced that she has legally changed her surname. What has changed is the name being used publicly for this new era.
Twenty years after Hannah Montana introduced the world to Miley Cyrus, the next chapter is apparently just… Miley.
